The latest episode of The Map Room is out on Old Bull TV! This week, Eric Cunningham (@decunningham2), Nick Morris (@TossupReport), and Jared Stone (@JStonePolitics) discuss the swing state of Pennsylvania. This incredibly competitive rust belt state flipped to the Republican column in 2016 – but it’s more complicated than that!
The hosts explain all you need to know about the basics of Pennsylvania politics: its strong history of ticket-splitting, historic Democratic lean, and increasingly shifting coalitions. They go over the major metropolitan areas, the rapid shifts in suburbia and Appalachia, and the overall trend the state is seeing
Additionally, we discussed a major topic in Pennsylvania: gerrymandering. Republicans control the legislature and drew the maps, but following a decision from the Democratic-controlled Supreme Court, the districts were redrawn. Republicans and Democrats now share an even number of seats, with a handful of competitive districts that both parties are focusing on. The legislature seems fairly solid in the Republican column, however, even with shocking Republican declines in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
