Popcorn Politics: CGI Andy Plus Political Circus

On this week’s episode of Popcorn Politics, Eric Cunningham and I discussed the Supreme Court, along with Georgia and North Carolina’s Senate races. Amy Comey Barrett had her confirmation hearings this week and they went off without a hitch, in fact, voters now support her confirmation even before the election.

This was a complete failure in messaging, Barrett’s record is very controversial, but people don’t care about judicial philosophy.

The Democrats had a gift with the Garland hypocrisy, but instead, they gave Barrett legitimacy and treated her like a nominee, so of course, people warmed up to her. And if you want to talk about a failure in messaging, the Georgia Special Election is an all-around failure by everyone.

Kelly Loeffler, the Republican incumbent, was appointed with the idea to appeal to moderates, but her embrace of Qanon supporter Marjorie Taylor Greene and calling herself more conservative than Atila the Hun have ruined that strategy.

In hour 2, Eric and I discussed The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The Two Towers is a fantastic middle chapter for my favorite trilogy.

This installment gives us more Gollum, Faramir, and one of the greatest action set pieces in fiction with the battle of Helm’s Deep.

The story of Gollum is an incredibly tragic one but is also mostly film original content. The book Gollum wasn’t as tragic and frail as the portrayal by Andy Serkis. The battle of Helm’s Deep also contains some of my favorite material in the series, specifically the fight atop the wall between the Elves and Orcs. Overall this film is remembered for the sheer scale of its production and for setting up the 3rd installment, which ranks among my favorite films of all time.
