The latest episode of The Map Room is out on Old Bull TV! This week, Eric Cunningham (@decunningham2) and Jared Stone (@JStonePolitics) discuss the swing state of Wisconsin. This state was long part of the Democratic “blue wall”, but it has experienced a Republican trend recently culminating in Trump’s 2016 win.
The hosts explain all you need to know about the basics of Wisconsin politics: the strong divide between Milwaukee, Madison, and the rest of the state, the staunchly Republican WOW counties (including crucial Waukesha County), and the ancestral Democratic support in the driftless region. They also discussed the recent gubernatorial and Senate elections, including Ron Johnson’s upset wins in 2010 and 2016.
Additionally, we discussed a major topic in Wisconsin: gerrymandering. Republicans control a supermajority in the legislature despite having lost the popular vote in 2018. Additionally, Republicans have 5 out of 8 congressional seats, and President Trump actually won 6 of 8 seats. The hosts show what a fair map of the state might look like.
