The Lone Star State has long been a bastion of Republican politics, but recent trends suggest a shift. This episode focuses on ground zero of the shift: Harris County. With over 4.6 million people, it’s the largest county in the state. Its county seat, Houston, is the sixth-largest city in the country and one of the most diverse.
Republicans once dominated in Harris County, but it has voted for Democrats since 2008 at the presidential level. A majority of its House delegation is now Democratic, and Democrats control every countywide office. Massive shifts in Harris and its surrounding counties represent the new problems Republicans face with white, college-educated voters.
