Campaign Diaries: Nikki Haley (July 17-23)

July 17

Nikki Haley spoke at an event hosted by Christians United for Israel, as well as its chairman and founder John Hagee. As the name suggests, CUFI is an advocacy group that supports Israel. During her talk, Haley strongly condemned Iran, Biden’s foreign policy, antisemitism, and Democrats, all whilst supporting Israel. You can watch it here

A lot of her fury was directed at “The Squad,” a group of generally left-wing progressives who are usually more critical of Israel. Representative Ilhan Omar (MN-05), a member of the squad, has been accused of anti-semitism. Haley called for The Squad to be censured.

Today, Private Travis King of the US Army crossed the border from South Korea into North Korea. King was reportedly laughing as he did so, but was immediately detained. He was on a civilian tour of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) when he did it. King had been in trouble before, once for desertion and another for assault. He’d spent time in a military prison.

The US has sprung into action to protect King and ask for his safe return. Haley said that there would be “hell to pay” if the soldier was harmed.

This, and her comments on the reported antisemitism of Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), and of John Kerry, can be seen here.

Haley met with Darin Hoover, the father of a soldier killed in a bombing during the evacuation of Kabul.

July 19

Haley went against nine members of the House who voted against a resolution supporting Israeli-American relations. They are made up of members of “The Squad” and a few others. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fired back, saying that they “don’t ignore human rights abuses against Palestinians.”

She welcomed the Israeli PM, Isaac Herzog, to America.

July 20

Haley was in Greenville in her home state of South Carolina for a town hall. She spent time with her daughter and son-in-law while there. Upon hearing about Chinese hackers accessing emails by the US Ambassador to China, Haley said the following:

To Joe Biden, Janet Yellen, John Kerry, and all the people who think we can befriend China, pay attention. We now know that Chinese hackers accessed the email account of the U.S. ambassador, compromising hundreds of thousands of government emails. China is not our friend. China is our enemy. It’s time to wake up and start acting like it. That starts by getting Joe Biden out of the White House.”

July 21

Haley named her inaugural “Comrade of the Week.” This is to name and shame those she believes are too close to China. Haley gave the reasons here

July 22

A quiet day for Haley

July 23

Haley is at 3.9% in the polls

It was all about Israel this week, with China and North Korea getting a mention. Haley was really pushing her Zionist credentials forward, considering the Republicans at large generally support Israel. She wasn’t afraid to scrap with members of Congress- will that benefit her in the long run or prove to be a mistake?
