Campaign Diaries: Nikki Haley (July 10-16)

July 10

Nikki Haley and supporters have talked about how she wants to be America’s “Iron Lady.” Haley is an admirer of the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a no-nonsense conservative. Thatcher saw great electoral success but had a very public downfall. Who would Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis and others compare themselves to?

Haley reported that her SuperPAC raised $34.3M.

She took time to praise Iowa’s Governor Kim Reynolds as a ‘conservative superstar.’ Haley and Reynolds have been allies for a long time and seem to get along well. It seems that Haley is backing Reynolds after Trump attacked her for her neutrality.

July 11

Haley called Reynolds “the best Governor in America.”

She also supported Ukraine’s entry into NATO. The idea has seen pushback from some, as President Joe Biden said that he does not see it happening until after the end of the current conflict.

July 12

Haley went for Vice President Kamala Harris, saying that “America can’t afford” for her to become President. Harris is seen as a natural successor to Biden, as is common with vice presidents. She has seen rather low approval ratings, however, so it will be interesting to see if this comes to fruition.

A quiet day for Haley.

July 14

Haley was in the Hawkeye state of Iowa today. She attended a lakeside event hosted by Iowa State Representative Austin Harris in the evening.

The main event, however, was a talk/interview hosted by former Fox News presenter and conservative firebrand Tucker Carlson. His talk was part of The Family Leadership Summit which was located in Des Moines. Candidates queued up to be grilled by Carlson, they included Haley, Mike Pence, Asa Hutchinson, Tim Scott, Vivek Ramaswamy and Ron DeSantis. Topics ranged from school choice to election interference. You can find Haley’s interview here

Those who saw the interview were said to be impressed with Haley- no doubt a good thing when you need to get voters on side.

Haley wrote a piece about growing up in rural South Carolina. I’m unfortunately blocked from accessing it due to being in the U.K., but you can read it here

Polling today saw Haley fifth at 4.2%.

A quiet day for Haley.

July 16

A quiet day for Haley.

It wasn’t any candidate that stole the show this week, it was Tucker Carlson. Campaigns furiously crammed when they heard that he was doing the interviews. Meanwhile, Haley didn’t seem to come off too worse for wear after her slot. The fact that Donald Trump wasn’t there probably helped her and the other candidates.

Polk numbers remain the same. Would Trump dropping out help or would less popular candidates leaving boost her numbers?
