The Map Room: Virginia

The Map Room logo

The latest episode of The Map Room is out on Old Bull TV! This week, Eric Cunningham (@decunningham2), Nick Morris (@TossupReport), and Jared Stone (@JStonePolitics) discuss the state of Virginia. This state was once a Republican-leaning one, but it flipped to Obama in 2008 and hasn’t really ever flipped back.

The hosts explain all you need to know about the basics of Virginia politics: its current Democratic edge, a strong Democratic decade in statewide offices, and the effect of Donald Trump in the 2016 election. They go over the major metropolitan areas of the state, from the DC suburbs in Northern Virginia to the military-heavy Hampton Roads area, as well as the overall trend the state is seeing. They also discussed the sanctuary county issue that emerged following new gun control laws passed by the Democratic legislature.

Additionally, we discussed a major topic in Virginia: gerrymandering. Democrats currently control the legislature after flipping it in 2019, but the congressional lines and legislative lines saw court battles over the last decade. Democrats charged Republicans with gerrymandering, while Republicans aimed to maintain their last amount of control in the state. The legislature now seems fairly firm in the Democratic column, but with the strong possibility of an independent commission drawing the lines next cycle, it’s unclear what they might look like.
