The latest episode of The Map Room is out on Old Bull TV! This week, Eric Cunningham (@decunningham2) and Jared Stone (@JStonePolitics) conclude the series on Texas. Continuing from the previous episode on the Dallas-Fort Worth area, they discuss the rest of the state, including Austin, San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley, and the Panhandle!
While half of Texans live in the Houston and DFW areas, the rest of Texas has a large and diverse number of urban areas. Austin and San Antonio represent the largest of these. Austin, a politically liberal city, is rapidly growing, while San Antonio is both predominantly Democratic and Hispanic. Surrounding both cities are Republican suburbs and rural areas, but these are shifting left as well. The RGV and Panhandle, meanwhile, have interesting demographic and political traits in their own right.
As always, a wide variety of election maps help show some of the major shifts that have been occurring throughout Texas. Eric and Jared explain the major demographic and political divides that exist in the state’s sprawling west, including the many Hispanic Republicans in the Texas Panhandle as well as Republican overperformance in the RGV in off-year elections.
